Why do Laserdiscs feel futuristic to me, even though they were (at best) super-niche when I was young and I never saw them?

They were different. They were *analog* optical media. Seriously. Everything else encodes data based on the pattern of pits and lands. Laserdiscs encode data based on the lengths of the pits and lands to form a raw RF signal.
