One of the saddest things I hear on pretty much a weekly basis is "ah yes, I left the video game industry and now I'm paid better, have more stability, and am happier and more satisfied with my life"

I wonder how much of that is expectations on what game development is like. Almost every developer I know dreamed of it their entire childhood. Childhood dreams tend to be idealized and fanciful. I'm NOT saying that the industry couldn't be better, pay higher wages/benefits..

1/ After 15 years, I still I always like to say that everyone gets into the industry going "I want to work on Mario!" and nobody ever says "I want to work crunch hours on Barbie: Magical Horse Adventure!" Yet one is vastly more likely than the other.

2/ Typically things land somewhere in the middle of the two, but working at a large publisher-owned studio is soul-sucking. There's a reason why I work at @ArrowheadGS and am far happier than any other job I've had in the past 15 years.
