Update: It turns out that the IEEE 1394-1995 spec gives pretty much all of the necessary info and pseudocode to generically emulate a Firewire PHY. Looks like the hill I'm pushing this boulder up just got a bit more level.

My current Sisyphean MAME task: Trying to emulate the TI TSB12LV01A Firewire link-layer controller and the IBM 21S851 Firewire PHY. Why? Because apparently, a whole two arcade games (Cruis'n Exotica and The Grid) use them for link-up play.
