Turns out the MAST diag on the CMI IIx was failing the PIT (primary pitch register) timing test because of a silly error in the Motorola 6840 timer emulation: We were accounting for the optional divide-by-8 divisor for T3 on external clocks, but not internal. PIT test passes now.
This is exactly why it's nice that MAME subsumed MESS. Having a wider surface of test cases for our device emulation means better opportunities to find and fix bugs. This issue existed for years, who knows how long it would have taken, if ever, to find an arcade game that hit it.
