I have to give props to my friend Ted. We both vehemently disagree on this whole Naughty Dog leak situation. But we also appreciate each others' insights from opposite sides of the industry, and can disagree without lobbing insults at each other.

2/ As for the average gamer's opinion, for a game that shipped about 17 million units, I can't help but think that this controversy is ginned up more by YouTube talking heads who want to grab view counts than people legitimately incensed by the supposed ending.
3/ My friend likened it to the Streisand Effect, but this is a fallacious use of the term. The Streisand Effect was from Barb trying to suppress legally-taken aerial photos of her home. These are illegally-obtained assets from committing multiple federal felonies.

4/ So at the end of the day, no, I don't think that this fervor being stirred up by a handful of YouTubers with an axe to grind is really that big of a deal. Every game goes through iterative development, and the ending now simply might not be what it ships with.

So many games nowadays seem to be subject to this sort of ginned-up controversy. From the right you hear "This game promotes the LGBT community, boo hoo hoo!" From the left, "This game promotes fascism, boo hoo hoo!" Yet they're simply art pieces that you make of what you will.
