The Quantel DPB-7000 is such a fascinating piece of hardware. It's pretty much akin to a single pixel pipeline of a modern(ish) fixed-function GPU, except it was made in 1981.

The filtering on the Paintbox was a major selling point at the time ISTR. When the BBC replaced their Soft Paintbox rendered weather with a Mac-rendered system in the mid-to-late 90s the difference was stark. The Mac-rendered graphics had more visible aliasing/interline twitter.
