Granted, it's not completely awful. It's more just that more naïve users might be lulled into thinking the end result is inherently accurate to reality. It gets my dander up in much the same way as filters like xBR, 2xSAI, SuperEagle, et al when used in emulators.
Mmm. There's nothing that can do as good a job as a human being with a copy of Photoshop or a paintbox manually recolouring the photo. I think rescaling/reconstruction algorithms have a purpose - in art packages. Another effect to play with.
Exactly - it does quite a good job of simulating the colour response of certain film stocks from around the 1940's. It's a compelling effect, even. If it were being promoted as a way of quickly simulating certain types of color grading, I'd be on it like ants on sugar.
