Emulating a fairly unique floppy drive at a flux level is kind of a nightmare.

Could be, aye. I have to say, looking at it as a whole, it's a small wonder the Paintbox ca.1981 cost around 150 grand. Over 4 megabytes of RAM in total, over 600 kilobytes of ROM, a 160 meg hard disk as standard. In 1981. Yowza!

Have you come across the (RSD?) removable hard drive stuff ?

Not yet! Currently I'm just trying to make my awful, kludgy FDD code actually work from .mfm images rather than individual tracks pre-converted to one .bin file per track and side. Then it's on to the Size Card and Filter Card so I can actually load the font and main brushes.
