I dunno if it’s just me, but the climate of “there’s nothing to worry about, this is Sweden,” when there is much to worry about, is making me reevaluate occasions where something seemed off, and I assumed it was all in my head. For example, working in a skyscraper with no stairs

Oh god that’s an absolutely chilling analogy! And it puzzles me even more. Sweden actually does show some leadership on climate policy, or at least emphasizes the urgency. And yet...this.

Our economy is largely built around the automotive industry (not oil, but related) and we manage to push relatively hard for climate policies. The Swedish Smugness is usually directed in a relatively “good” direction, so it’s not as visible to left-leaning/ liberal types, BUT...

When the smugness - for some reason - takes a turn away from humanities/people focused policies, it becomes more visible to us in those groups. We’re not used to see Sweden take a “money first”-approach

It definitely happens, but it tends to not be the norm. The Swedish Smugness is strong and treats “opponents” roughly

It's so strong to the point of insidiousness. I didn't realize I was being smug the other day until someone rightly gave me a verbal whack upside the head. It's the difference between stating "at least we're not X" rather than asking "why are we not Y".

I feel a bit like, as an American, I welcome you to being embarrassed about your country... (I guess it doesn’t help but, ya know, we are at least in that together?)

As a US expat myself, that's why I feel so ashamed that I was giving in to that desire to be Swedishly Smug™. I'm quick to jump on the myriad of problems the US has - because my life was miserable before I moved - yet overlooking Sweden's faults feels alarmingly natural.

My mom still lives in the US and is 65, her husband works at a university that has been catastrophically mismanaging the outbreak. I'm absolutely terrified for them. That I was so gleefully going "at least we're not the US" just the other day is a black mark on my soul.
