I just wish that we could have discussed things as Patricia and I did. I do not at all deny that the Swedish gov't can do better. I just feel that it's also natural to want to claw at the mylar-thin silver lining as a defence mechanism.

1/ First, I've lifted the block. I was emotional and being a complete ass. Second, I agree the government needs to lock things down because the latency in reporting paints a rosier picture than really exists, misleading people into thinking it's safer to go out than it really is.

2/ Third, I've had people try to tell me that the Swedish government can't declare a stay-at-home order due to laws. Well, the Karensdag was a law too, one that Riksdagen worked around. Why then is a stay-at-home order untenable? It's not.

3/ Fourth, I'm still not proud of Sweden's handling of this situation. I just spent the first 28 years of my life in the US on the east coast where it's been a complete catastrophe. Places like NY, TN, and FL. I'd rather be here in Sweden than there. Faint praise, I know.

4/ That said, my partner is from the UK. Based on their family getting COVID-19 and a general devil-may-care attitude of the populace towards going out, and my partner having debilitating asthma, they'd be a fatality statistic had they not moved to Sweden in January.

5/ I agree that on a fundamental level, Swedes and the Swedish government need to stop comparing themselves to the bottom of the statistical barrel and realise their geographical neighbours have handled it significantly better.

6/ Nevertheless, despite the fact that around 15% of Sweden's population would like to see me beaten with pipes for being an immigrant and/or gay and/or non-cisgender (take your pick), my life here is objectively better than it ever was in the US.

And so it is for other US and UK expats I know. I just don't want to ever lose the perspective that as bad as things are, they could and have been worse in other countries. Because positivity is thin on the ground, and if I couldn't find something to take solace in, I'd go nuts.

So you had a story behind you and I am glad you have found a place to feel safe-ish in. My partner also has a story here and it has unfortunately not contributed to a sence of safety. This pandemic response has made it worse even. Lets just leave it there. Stay healthy!

You please stay healthy as well, both you and your partner, and you and your partner's families. In the event that we don't speak again, glad påskhelg!
