I think I've finally figured out why so many programmers hate UI programming: If you do it right, it's a thankless job. If you do it wrong, you get no end of grief. That's why I love UI programming - the downright subtlety of a job well done.
What's the first thing you see when you boot up a game? UI. What's the last thing you see after beating a game? UI. A game with cutting-edge graphics, glorious audio, and amazing gameplay, is *nothing* if it has a bad UI or UX.
The best UI is one that is completely unnoticeable to the user, one which informs the user and lets them know what they can and can't do, while being 100% unobtrusive. Because it enables them to do what they want to do, without slinging random roadblocks in the way.
