Here's an idea: If you want to make a free to play game, sell it until you make enough to pay for the development, then make it f2p with donations. Want to add content? Do the same with DLC. I see where people would get mad paying for a game that eventually becomes f2p, but...

1/ Here's an idea: Game companies aren't charities, and they still need to be able to pay their staff while making the next title. The idea of cutting off a revenue source - because that's what relying on donations is - as soon as the break-even point is met is ludicrous.

2/ At the end of the day, while there are successful indie titles developed on a shoe-string, the broader market demands games with ever-increasing scope, which means ever-increasing development costs.

3/ Shareholders demanding ever-increasing profits are not blameless either, but unless gamers are prepared to start paying two hundred bucks for a title, they need to stop blaming companies for doing what they can to pay their staff.
