2/ At the end of the day, while there are successful indie titles developed on a shoe-string, the broader market demands games with ever-increasing scope, which means ever-increasing development costs.
3/ Shareholders demanding ever-increasing profits are not blameless either, but unless gamers are prepared to start paying two hundred bucks for a title, they need to stop blaming companies for doing what they can to pay their staff.

4/ Two out of the three titles you mentioned in your follow-up are published or developed by Valve, a company which has more money than God thanks to taking a cut of sales on Steam. Sorry to break it to you but most companies don't have that option.

I have that option. I could do it right now if my game was anywhere near production. And I'm one person. It's pretty damn simple to release a product under one price and promise a reduction in price after a goal is met. Making excuses for greedy capitalists is never a good look.
