Having been diagnosed ~20 years ago as being on the autism spectrum, it always weirds me out a bit when I can sit kibitzing with some coworkers for 45 minutes without trouble. It makes me wonder, am I even autistic? Or are my coworkers just as autistic as I am?

It means it's a spectrum, and you probably have some other autism symptoms enough to get the diagnosis but not that one in particular. If "not enjoying socialization" is actually even a symptom and not just something that happens to occur in a lot of autistic people.

As with all things, it comes down to a matter of degree. I don't enjoy socializing. Not in the way most people seem to conceptualize it, anyway. I'd rather go eat rusty metal fragments than have to socialize with people I don't know. But my coworkers and I, we have a rapport.

You had dinner with me (a rando from Twitter) a couple of years ago when I was over in sthlm. Hopefully that was ok for you. Maybe it’s a matter of knowing that you’re talking to compatible/sympathetic people (gaming, tech, whatever)?

I think you probably hit the nail on the head. Knowing at least some common ground from the start takes off a ton of pressure.
