Lift weights and easy to moderate cardio for the first year or so. 3 times / week. Big movements (squat, bench, upper body pulling exercises, and Romanian deadlifts). Since you're a programmer, upper body pulling should be biggest focus.
So for example 2 of those type of movements in one workout. Spend 10-15 minutes on each. Then end with 15-20 minutes on a rower or bike. Squats twice per week and upper body pulling twice as well, the other once. Google a bit for starting strength and buy the book. Covers most.
