The people at the pet store won't know if you have a cat or not. Go for it. As far as I know there's not much evidence that the relaxing effect of catnip tea is anything other than placebo, but I can at least confirm it's not at all toxic to people.

What if they're like "so what is your cat's name" and I'm like "uhhhh" and they can tell I'm making something up on the spot or I admit it and I'm like "I don't have one, I'm just gonna eat this myself" and they judge me

Having read my fair share of r/talesfromretail, I'd be willing to bet the person working the register is most likely trying *not* to hear the customer's life story, I think you'll be fine. :D
