Haven't seen Gray's Anatomy, so I'll just point out that "proper" pronouns are whatever one wants to use. It doesn't take a whole shitload of effort to simply recall what a given person wants to be called. You ask, they tell you, you use it. End of.
I don't give a shit if the person asking to be called "she" has an even more epic beard than I do. At the end of the day it costs me nothing to be respectful.
