The hell you say. 2010 is the bloody payoff. It's revealed that HAL wasn't just some awful psycho computer. The bromance (and in the book, actual romance) between Curnow and Max. The social dynamic of diplomatic breakdown stretching as far as Jupiter.
If by "perfect pacing" you mean fifteen minutes of Keir Dullea panting into a microphone and half a damn hour of slit-scan photography then yeah, maybe, but for me the movie works better than Ambien.

Maybe it's the ADHD, but while I love the movie, I just feel like a good half hour of the footage could have been left on the cutting room floor without much impact on the end result. My mind starts wandering. Maybe not modern cuts every 2 seconds, but there's a happy medium.
