PSA: If your FPGA-based emulator is just based on observation, then unless it exactly replicates all the quirks of the original hardware, it is no more accurate than a software emulator, it's just inaccurate faster

Isn't a hardware-based simulation still emulation? Even if it's "perfect", it's still not the same hardware, no? Or do I have a wrong definition of emulation?

If you program an FPGA to be, blackbox-wise, an exact copy of the original chip, it is not an emulator, it is a replica as I would see it. Would you call AMD's 386-compatible chips that went into boards for 80386 (and everything after that) hardware emulators of Intel CPUs?
