This might explain why my brother spent his final term at uni referring to the FPGA he was working with for his dissertation as the Fantastically Punchable Gate Array, I've a feeling he was doing emulation stuff

A $20 PlayStation classic does a decent job too. N64 and Dreamcast aren't great but $20 is a decent little emulator box

the biggest pro that i can see with an FPGA-based emulator is that you can use some of the actual hardware like cartridges with it …which as cartridges and controllers get rarer becomes less of an advantage

but it could also help maintain an ecosystem where people are producing 3rd party carts

the only true way to do FPGA emulation is to steal the HDL code for the hardware and dump it into said FPGA
