FPGA does not imply emulation--presumably they flashed in an actual bare-metal CPU design. (The "programmable" part of FPGA means that logic gate connections can be configured through a ROM flash type process rather than through photolithography.)
Which is great and all, but unless they deplaned the actual video and audio hardware and REd the gate layout, they're still just using what amounts to a software emulator's observation-based emulation ported to HDL, same as most of these FPGA emulators.
Wait, they DON’T decap the chips, read them in with an electron microscope and recreate them in verilog (or whatever)?
I can't tell whether you're being facetious or not, but no, generally FPGA emulators are observation-based, same as software emulators. They don't think it be like it is, but it do.
They tend to bisimulate the fpga with the real thing which software emus can only dream of. They being Analogue specifically
