Sean could decap the MCU but that would likely only tell us what it is, not how to dump it (unless it turns out to be an MCU with known dumping method, AND the pins required are exposed externally) A lot of these aren't 'mask' based, so don't have visible bits for optical method.

Sean's also not really got anything in the way of free time at the moment tho, he's been sat on the pile of plug and plays we've already sent him for most of the year, and only *might* have time to even start processing those again in December, if we're lucky.

Oh and the decap process is generally destructive, so even if it turns out to be a known dumpable MCU type, a second unit would be required to do the actual dumping. Unfortunately that's how these processes go, it's about establishing knowledge, and we can't even always use that.

Additionally, I'd like to point out that Haze has put an absolutely Herculean amount of effort into obtaining these systems, getting them to the right folks for dumping, raising visibility, and improving the SunPlus u'nSP emulation. But it *has* been a group effort.

Indeed, Peter for one also invested a large amount of money into these things. Once Sean starts dumping again we'll likely see quite a lot of those too, at which point Peter may consider picking up some more. People across the world have also helped with shipping etc. too.

Also the existing scene that has been studying the NES based stuff, and bringing some of those findings to MAME. (I fear we might have driven them away a bit tho by reverting a change, although said change broke more than it fixed)

Was it explained to them, privately and at length, that the change broke more than it fixed? I can't imagine them staying angry for too long if there's a reasonable technical justification for the reversion. Then again, this is the emulation scene we're talking about here.

They were given notification on GitHub, but didn't respond, so it was eventually reverted, but we haven't seen any submissions since. Could just be that progress isn't possible with the current state of the base NES emulation tho.

Could very well be. I still have that NES PPU rewrite that I want to do. Are we still on for a beer buy for the first one of us to rewrite either the NES PPU or the Megadrive VDP? :)

I honestly think the level you have to go to for an MD VDP with current knowledge available is beyond the level on which I understand emulation. You'd need to be running the VDP in single step with the CPU and display etc. (and how that would interact with other use cases...)
