A couple examples are neogeo.cpp and megadriv.cpp. Those are, of course, well known and I can find the info elsewhere, but one of the 'features' of my project is to have people use that MAME info to decode graphics from anything it supports. So uh... Where does that live?

The simple answer is that it doesn't live anywhere, it gets decoded at draw time. This is in fact more accurate to how systems really worked, and I would expect it to get harder, not easier, to rip graphics via MAME as time moves forward.

I've seen this, but I think Moogly has answered most questions. I think cam900 did just add tile viewing the MD, although I haven't measured if there's a performance cost (I guess if drawgfx isn't being used the tiles won't be decoded every time, unless you view them)

Yeah, he explained the reasoning behind it, how it's in the interest of accuracy. It's just unfortunate for me as it provided a quick, concise way to decode graphics.
