Well, he hasn't gone to _mass murder_. What he's done is definitely a major issue, but there's still a scale difference. It's possible to still talk about the good in passing(*), then move to say "But now we need to deal with the rest because this is not acceptable."
My point here is that it might be something appropriate to a discussion about the history of the Volkswagen company, but in most contexts it's immaterial. Sure, RMS has helped push free software forward. But that's irrelevant right now.

My point is that it's going to come up whether you like it or not, so you might as well take the extra moment in advance to cut that sort of attack angle off. Either way, we agree that the guy's behavior is EXTREMELY problematic. Have you looked into E*R, by chance?
