Am I wrong here, or is this "cancel culture" rubbish just a dog whistle for "I'm being rightly taken to task for a consistent pattern of garbage actions or views, and instead of self-reflection or contrition, I will respond with churlish indignation"?

Almost always, yeah. As a rule, you can never say 100% because there's always the weird edge cases, but it's about as close as you generally get with these.

Which is really right in line with my generation's slow slide (and the increasing speed of all generations after mine) in refusing to take personal responsibility for their actions.
