Not gonna lie, I adore all of you folks that I follow, but y'all intimidate the heck out of me, because by comparison I kind of feel like a failure. I have retro computers, but don't do anything interesting with them. I have a synthesizer but can't compose.

I mean, that goes for some of us following you! I wish I had the means and skills to do original research and work on MAME drivers.

Serious question, you certainly have the reverse-engineering skills to work on something like MAME - what's stopping you? If it's just a matter of the codebase being intimidating, most of us on the team are happy to mentor!

The biggest issue for me is the 'means' part of my statement - I don't have any hardware to run tests against and thus can't make any meaningful contributions. Also, yes, the codebase is pretty crazy and I'm still a bit of a C++ baby.

But I recently made a Machine Config change as a contribution based on some code findings, so I'll probably have some more of those lined up pretty soon. So I'm still doing what I can! :) I'm just jealous of those really awesome contribs that further preservation.

Looking forward to seeing more PRs from you! Everything helps. As for the C++ thing, the most gnarly bits are in the core, where even most other devs dare not meddle. Writing or improving devices is pretty light on the C++ wrangling, and I'm always here to answer questions!
