Not gonna lie, I adore all of you folks that I follow, but y'all intimidate the heck out of me, because by comparison I kind of feel like a failure. I have retro computers, but don't do anything interesting with them. I have a synthesizer but can't compose.

I mean, that goes for some of us following you! I wish I had the means and skills to do original research and work on MAME drivers.

Serious question, you certainly have the reverse-engineering skills to work on something like MAME - what's stopping you? If it's just a matter of the codebase being intimidating, most of us on the team are happy to mentor!

The biggest issue for me is the 'means' part of my statement - I don't have any hardware to run tests against and thus can't make any meaningful contributions. Also, yes, the codebase is pretty crazy and I'm still a bit of a C++ baby.

A surprising amount of MAME is simply a matter of what you specialize in, though, albeit in a different vein. Most of it was written based on observation and studying code. I'm sure there are DU members who could help run tests, too.
