In fact that's when my great-grandfather came over & where he settled :) it's fascinating to me what cultural bits stuck and what didn't
Similarly, with such an outflux from Sweden to the US, it baffles me how little folks seem to really know about it. I can think of about four things: The loan-word "smorgasbord", IKEA, Swedish Fish (which were invented in New Jersey), and Swedish meatballs (which are Turkish).

I sometimes also hear, "Oh, Sweden! I love their chocolate!" Me: "That's Switzerland." Them: "Oh. Well, their windmills are cool, too." Me: "That's the Netherlands! They don't even start with the same letter!"

I grew up with some of the food culture, although there's a lot of German and Norwegian mixed in—we'll do lefse at Christmas, krumkake, egg coffee

But as time goes the connection becomes more tenuous. I have Nth cousins in Sweden who I've met and know a bit. Some of the rest of the family has visited (crayfish!), and I've always wanted to, but haven't yet managed it.
