Agreed. I even hope you have nice things in your life. I forgive you for things that happened in the past, and apologize for my own behavior in the past.

Best thing you can do is to ignore politics other than laughing from afar. As for turning one's life around, hell, I never would have been able to hack it at my current job if I had applied even a year before I did. I'm still baffled sometimes as to why they hired me.

That's the funny thing though. Other than Minecraft, my professional experience has been largely bereft of anything approaching AAA. I mean, Superman Returns? The latest (at the time) yearly versions of Tiger Woods, or NCAA? Wii versions of Guitar Hero?

Ultimately what I've found is that they care a lot more about social fit at Arrowhead than outright technical ability. Because tech abilities can always be improved, but a lousy social fit will immediately start digging social holes that are hard to climb out of.

But that still overlooks the fact that the people that they've been hiring over the time I've been there have been fucking phenomenal, both technically and socially. But yeah. In both cases, I'm not sure how I made the grade, but I'm quite grateful I did.

I think the best lesson to take away from it all is that there's always improvement to be made, but it's also worthwhile to be proud of how far you've come. Being egotistical is a death sentence in this industry - but there's no need to be overly humble, either. It's a balance.
