Correction: It loads the first file in the directory structure on IEC device 8, as a binary file. :)
LOAD "*",8 would load the first file in the directory structure on IEC device 8 as a BASIC program. The ,1 was important for loading games, as they would load to the destination address, usually also preloading the kernal's [sic] input buffer to auto-run the newly-loaded game.

Yep, Commodore consistently misspelled "kernel" as "kernal" in all of their documentation.

Hold up... I seem to recall the load"*",8 also loading the last file loaded as well.. am I recalling that wrong?

You're completely correct! The last file loaded or, if it's a clean boot, the first file from the disk. A handy-dandy multitool of a command!
