It loads the first file on a C64 floppy drive. :)
Correction: It loads the first file in the directory structure on IEC device 8, as a binary file. :)

LOAD "*",8 would load the first file in the directory structure on IEC device 8 as a BASIC program. The ,1 was important for loading games, as they would load to the destination address, usually also preloading the kernal's [sic] input buffer to auto-run the newly-loaded game.
