But as someone who cares about game preservation I think it's important to be aware of: Just like with floppy disks, flash-based game cartridges have a limited lifespan.

These are rarer these days as it became cheaper and easier to put a controller on them, as a controller-less flash chip could be destroyed relatively quickly by a host device that's not doing a good job of leveling it.

And it's possible this is what's being done in the switch/vita: If the wear-leveling is done in the console itself, it may help as it can afford to do better wear-leveling, but it doesn't really solve the problem of carts sitting on a shelf for a decade.

And one last thing: Starting with complaining about piracy and ending with "ALL YOUR SWITCH CARTS ARE GOING TO FUCKING DIE" isn't as much as a non-sequitur as it might seem at first.

Because all your legitimately purchased Switch games are going to disappear at some point. But the pirated ones won't.

Pirates will dump them, store them in files, figure out how to build flash carts or play the dumps off a modded switch, and play them in emulators. And those pirated copies will be spread around the internet and saved in a million places and they will easily survive.
