I've been thinking about SA a lot lately, because while the community standards would have been problematic for many, the strong moderation was always present, and reasonably consistent. The adding of probations was brilliant in how it grew and encouraged those norms.

Was I an annoying autist who possibly deserved to be called out back then? Sure. I've changed quite a lot over the past however many years. But hearing you of all people, Zoë, defending a forum which once routinely engaged in bullshit gatekeeping just blows my mind.

sorry - I should’ve clarified that it was not meant to say the culture was flawless or that bad shit didn’t get overlooked or encouraged, just that when compared to 4chan and twitter, there was way more enforcement. I don’t know what happened to you, but I am so sorry it did.

Thank you. I will totally agree that the site had a much better SNR than places like 4chan or even Twitter. But SA ultimately led to me not speaking to my own mother for upwards of five years because she took my Helldump thread as unadulterated gospel, and I'll never forgive it.
