tl;dr: My motivation to work on something is inversely proportional to how recently someone has asked me to look into it. That goes for many MAME devs. And many hobbyist developers in general.

You're not entirely wrong. That all said, there have been a couple of times when I've immediately jumped onto something that someone requested, but it mainly had to do with the nature of the request. It's hard to elaborate in the limited space of a tweet.
