Sounds like the first time I dug into the MAME UI hierarchy and ran screaming in the other direction,
UI programming: 10:00 - "Hey, a bug in this one UI screen. Should be easy to fix." 10:15 - "It would appear that I wrote this screen when I was first bringing up the underlying UI hierarchy system." 17:00 - "I long for the sweet embrace of death."
