Hey @DCcomics: please don’t cancel @MADMagazine! Losing satire is the LAST thing we need right now. The future of the weirdos who will change the world depends on it! #SaveMADmagazine

When was the last time you read MAD, though, Neil? I remember a time when it was still printed in black and white, on relatively cheap paper, and the only advertisements you'd see were just inside the covers, invariably for MAD-related anthologies or figurines. (1/2)

(2/2) If we were losing that MAD, it would be a shame indeed. But we're not losing the MAD of our respective childhoods. For roughly the past 18 years, MAD has been a full-color print, riddled with irrelevant adverts what felt like every 5-10 pages. Losing that is no great loss.

(3/I-Can't-Count) It feels like all of the people mourning the death of MAD are simply hopping on a bandwagon. The MAD that we all knew and loved died over a decade ago. They've simply kept its jerking, convulsing corpse wired up to a defibrillator for the past decade and a half.

I have the current issue sitting next to me. It contains ZERO outside ads. And there are only two pages with ads promoting MAD subscriptions and MAD book sales. If you're not subscribing because you think it's "riddled with irrelevant adverts," then good news! Buy a copy TODAY!

Yes, I'd have to ask, MogMiner, if you've read it lately, too!

I gave up on it ca. 2004 when I was seeing double-page ads for the latest games from Sony or Sega. It felt like they were taking my childhood out back of the shed and shooting it. Did MAD ever return to its classic format? If so, count me in the keep-it-alive camp.

It is very different now, but the only way to ensure it has the fighting chance of touching it's former glory is to buy it. You might not love it like you once did, but a 10 year old friend will be thrilled to have it.

That's a very fair point. Just theorizing, but it seems like they turned to ads for funding due to flagging readership. If so, as someone heavily into historical preservation (albeit on the digital side), I wonder if they've considered offering a complete PDF archive to purchase.

Ultimately, if the new owner wants to shut MAD down, there's a profit motive. The sentiment behind the
#SaveMADMagazine hashtag is inspiring, and if every person tweeting it bought a Totally MAD revival, it might provide the necessary wake-up call to corporate.1 vastaus 0 uudelleentwiittausta 2 tykkäystä
For those not in the loop - way back in the day, MAD Magazine offered a complete archive of magazine scans for purchase on a massive number of CD-ROM discs, and eventually a fewer number of DVD-ROM discs. It's still a good idea. #SaveMADMagazine #ReviveTotallyMAD
