The disk sequencer was pretty simple, with a sector per track. The sector size was, if I recall correctly, 20 k on the earlier disks, and 28 k on the later disks. So there were really only four real commands - seek, select head, read track, and write track.
The directory was on the first few tracks. The metadata was written at the end of each picture (or whatever). So it would write the picture, cutout or what have you, and then read back the last track and write the metadata into it. Is there a 2k ram somewhere? That held the meta
