MAME's sister project which concentrated on non-coin-op platforms, MESS, was merged into MAME about 5 years ago. It helps that SGI also released documentation on most of the Indy's chipset back in the day to entice people to port Linux to it.

I own a real Indy and, if memory serves, they used the machine's MAC address as a license key. Bad thing is, it's kept in place with the machine's battery that also powers the RTC. So if your battery dies, bye bye MAC address. Does 6.5 use this?
Sun kit certainly did for a very long time. I don't recall the same problems with dead batteries on SGI kit, so I suspect they didn't.
