Awesome! This is the coolest emulation related thing I have seen in months! Those character artefacts in ButtonFly look like they might have X and Y swapped, but I guess you already ruled out such easy solutions ;-)

In fact that is exactly what the issue was. The Bresenham implementation that I lifted from another device in MAME has X/Y swapped in one case, and so needs X/Y swapped when passing them to write_pixel(). I had entirely missed that.
