Hot take: Steam got popular because people were sick of the late 90's / early 00's crap-fest where every publisher hamfistedly tried to shove their own garbage proprietary launcher down gamers' throats. That hasn't changed. Stop trying it, you corporate half-wits.

Let's also not forget that Steam was widely despised for its first few years of existence, because until Valve managed to sign a wide array of third-party content, it was just another proprietary launcher.

Now, I'm not necessarily saying that companies shouldn't try to create a product to compete with Steam; in fact, if Epic can sign more studios, their launcher has great potential. But all the rest just reek of shamelessly trying to squeeze gamers for even more cash.

Having some competition for Steam may actually be worth it for us, though, pushing Valve to be even more attractive.

Absolutely, and I hope Epic can continue to make use of existing developer relationships from the use of Unreal Engine. My gripe lies squarely with the likes of EA, ATVI, and Ubisoft.

I should also point out, having worked for two out of the latter three companies in the past, that under no circumstances do the developers themselves deserve any grief over being relegated to publisher-specific launchers. They aren't allowed to make those kinds of decisions.
