Basically, all I've found with cursory Google searching is that I apparently should use an Arduino and an off-the-shelf library, because the concept of someone actually wanting to learn about a protocol is unheard of today, or something.
Imagine trying to search on Google for a cooking tutorial, and being inundated with a list of fast food restaurants. This is the EE equivalent of that, and it's infuriating.
