You know what's going to be great? When nes, snes, genesis etc games start hitting the public domain :)

Don't see how. Copyright is issued based on filing date or creation date, not based on release date. Virtual Console titles are binary-identical to what you'd use with an emulator, including using the iNES container format in the case of NES titles.

That said, thanks to Disney, the soonest one can expect any NES titles anyone actually cares about to be in the public domain is between 2050 and 2060.

Aside, it doesn't get mentioned often enough how cool it is that Nintendo, the corporate embodiment of NIH, did that. Not only that, but the ROM edits and emulation tweaks necessary for Harding FPA compliance are specified in a separate file, not by editing the games themselves.
