Totes! I keep trying to explain to other folks - commercial and open-source emulation can exist perfectly harmoniously. You can't expect original IP holders to suddenly bend over backwards and release dumps, docs, or boards to an unpaid, open-source project without quid pro quo.

In my experience it's very rare for a company to (a) actually still have any useful information lying around, (b) care enough to bother digging it out of archives, or (c) want to deal with legal issues related to whether they really own all assets of a 30 year old game.

Not precisely. Your point seemed to be that IP holders would offer better support to commercial emulators vs, open-source ones. My point was that IP holders in general have very little to offer either camp, either in actual assets or desire to help.

Yeah I mean...in this case they helped us borrow some boards from Japan, but they didn't have an actual assets left in-house other than some promo material. Really the asset we got that helped us was a development budget to spend to take the time to do the work...
