You can read more on Wikipedia here, it's pretty dang accurate - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_domain_in_the_United_States … - and don't think for a second that just because something's on http://archive.org that it's public domain. They just have a much bigger set of cajones than YouTube do.
All the more reason to move the time table forward on the paid group thing on Vimeo, I'd gladly chuck five bucks a month into the pot if it meant actually getting to see one of these moldy oldies all the way through to the end.
