It seems @DadSchool touched on this already, but I see an alarming number of self-Dx'd people using it as a way to go "Oh, I'm autistic, so I'm ALLOWED to be an asshole." No you're not. It's an explanation for bad behavior but never an excuse.

I support people using it as a reason to learn more about themselves, and as a set of guidelines for self-improvement. But all too often I just see self-Dx as a way of taking the good (leniency) without the bad (self-introspection).

No problem. Again, don't get me wrong: There's nothing inherently wrong with self-Dx. My only gripe is when a person uses it as an excuse to give others grief. For many people without the privilege of a proper Dx, it can be the only way they truly become "whole".

That’s a good distinction to make.

I don't believe I did conflate the two. In fact, I made a pretty clear distinction between the two. But thanks for your input!

Sorry! I wasn't sure if you were being sarcastic or not. I went into a detailed explanation a while ago as to how I find it difficult via text to tell when someone is being snarky and when they are not.

As the remainder of your comment focused (quite rightly) on the people who gatekeep via the arbitrary attribute of self-Dx, I thought it may have been directed at me. I apologize once again.
