I'd love to get back into writing line I did a decade ago, but I can never find the right topic. Or find the actual motivation.
The desire is there, I *want* to... but I flounder in actually trying to do anything.

This is probably a stupid question, but have you talked to your doctor about your medication not being as effective as it could be? You deserve to be happy.

The dose was recently increased. The effectiveness being so short is pretty normal for most instant release ADHD medications. It's just the nature of the chemicals, amphetamine derivatives & the like.

Dang. Hopefully once I jump through the necessary hoops and get the ADHD I've suspected I've had for decades diagnosed, they'll put me on an extended-release form. The one time a friend offered me an Adderall back in 2011 was the only time I've ever felt truly "normal".

Adderall, which we don't get in Australia afaik, comes in a commonly available (in US) extended release form. There's also extended release form of Ritalin, & a modified release of dexamphetamine called lysdexamphetamine. I think Strattera (atomoxetine) is longer acting too?

Thank you for all the information! It's very helpful to know beforehand, as there are still a couple of months yet before I can get diagnosed. I wonder why some countries have certain medications available but not others. That seems weird. o_O

There's lots of reasons, ranging from differing medical opinions, to legal, to financial. I think for Adderall, as a dexamphetamine derivative, it's seen as an unnecessary duplication of what dex (& the long acting lisdexamphetamine) itself already does. Dex is seen as suitable

Also ADHD medications and therapies in Aus are often treated punitively. All the stimulant meds are "Schedule 8", same as illegal recreational drugs. A lot of hurdles for psychiatrists to be speed to prescribe them at all, let alone the restrictions on who they can prescribe to

It seems that in a few circles of the upper medical community (who make some policies) ADHD is seen as "fake". Actual science disagrees, so we ended up with this heavily biased & discriminatory system, that seems to allow access to medications, but makes it really difficult.

Sounds like Sweden. Sought an ADHD diagnosis, was self-medicating with booze to "slow down" my brain, so the ADHD/Autism program referred me to addiction counseling. I asked if they'd considered that people self-medicate due to not getting the help they need. No real answer.

While I was admittedly drinking to excess, it was not, nor was it ever, anything like alcoholism. If it was, it would have been way harder to just drop drinking like a hot potato, and just have maybe a beer or three with coworkers on a Friday.

Then there's the fact that the guy who does my biweekly blood draws at the clinic is himself a nicotine addict. He failed to see the irony when I pointed it out.

At any rate, the plan is to jump through the hoops that they've set out for me, hopefully get the diagnosis, and hopefully get the right prescription. No need to drink or anything else if it's possible to finally get the right meds.
