The datasheet for the audio portion of the SunPlus SPG288 is so weird. Everything in it indicates the envelope counter should be reloaded with the envelope load register when the counter expires. Because of course, that would keep the envelope ticking at a consistent rate.
But no. If I reload the register, most of the samples don't play at all. If I leave it at zero, the samples cut off too early, but at least they sound a lot closer to actual hardware recordings, like so: http://polygonal-moogle.com/mame/vii/vii_meh.mp3 …
