The more I dig into emulating the SunPlus/GeneralPlus SPG2xx system-on-a-chip, the more I feel compelled to actually defend all of the cheap knockoff consoles using them, like the KenSingTon / JungleSoft Vii, Zone 60, and Wireless 60.
Are they riddled with copyright infringement? Absolutely. Are the games on them almost universally garbage? Most definitely. But that is not the fault of the underlying chipset. The chipset itself is surprisingly well-rounded and capable.
Has anyone ever tried making homebrew for these things?
I don't believe so, as dev boards for the SPG2xx are pretty hard to come by. I actually do have a dev board, though, which I bought off another dev roughly a decade ago at this point. One of these days I should do something with it, if it even still works.
