I've also felt that with regular software development. When you are in touch with the end user and are able to save them daily hours of work or make it easier/ simpler. That makes all the difference. And I believe more developers need that interaction.
One of the things I really love about contributing to MAME is when I get to make someone happy by fixing some long-standing bug or other. Knowing I managed to make just one person happy easily makes up for a whole handful of people pointlessly ragging on the project.
