Part of my day job includes sitting and talking with our dude in charge of the UI vision for the game, and he can give me some vague description and wave his fingers at the screen, and I just intuitively see in my head exactly what he's describing on a virtual screen.
As an afterthought, this is one of the great things about working at a small/medium-sized game studio: Still having the opportunity to sit down with the brilliant minds at the top, and do the ol' Vulcan Mind Meld, translating their vision into code.
